Hi YouTellYou reporters!

YouTellYou Idol (March best photo-story competition)

I can’t honestly say I was over the moon by the response to the first YouTellYou photo-story competition… the number of stories this month was a bit on the low side (sniff!).

This is a problem with all web startups: when a web magazine publishes a review, we get LOTS of visitors, but after a while the flow of users falls back to a trickle (unless of course you are Google or something…). So far YouTellYou had two peaks, one at the beginning of January due to a review from ReadWriteWeb just after go live and one at the end of February due to a review from CenterNetworks that was re-published by an Arabic web magazine (for a week there was a flood of visitors from Arab countries!). Anyway, YouTellYou is here for the long run and I am countint on my faithful authors and readers to keep using it and spread the word!

Coming back to the photo-story competition, the Jury has spoken and we have three winners (drumroll, please….):

Overall winner
Irene with her story about cruising the Aden Gulf in convoy to be safer from pirates (and I mean REAL pirates: the story is in Italian): http://youtellyou.com/stories/2010/0320/s819.php
Irene is a a professional journalist and a friend of mine so even if she’s a winner she will not get the t-shirt (sorry Irene, you already have one).

Best pictures
Eng Momo with his very interesting pictures of the Alexandria Library:

Check out the story of the ancient Library of Alexandria on Wikipedia:

Unfortunately for me and our non-Arab speaking readers the story captions are in Arabic characters so we cannot really appreciate what Eng has to say…

Young Author Award
Hanne H from Vanmeter School in Iowa (US) for her story on a holiday in Sanibel (Florida): http://youtellyou.com/stories/2010/0329/s847.php
Very well written and beautiful photos, congratulations Hanne! And an honorable mention for all Vanmeter School pupils that published stories!

Eng and Hanne will get the YouTellYou t-shirt which can come in Man size (S,M,L,XL,2XL) or Woman size (XS,S,M,L,XL,2XL).
Eng, Hanne, please check your sizes here:

Hints & Tips to write a catching photo-story

Let me share with you some ideas that might help you create a great photo-story:
  1. Use a minimum of three/four photos: less than that it’s less of a story and more a photo (or two) with a caption
  2. But don’t put too many! My choice would be between six and twelve but it’s not a fixed rule.
  3. If the subject allows it, try to be funny: for example you can write some captions that make your little child or brother or granma (or pet!) make funny comments on what’s going on in the photo
  4. Use a pattern with your sections: for example you can put all your photos on the left or alternate left/right
  5. Choose photos that follow a (loose) script: if it’s a holiday you might choose the best photo as the cover page, then a photo of the car in front of the house ready to go, then one of the place you went to, then some photos of your family having a good time: on the beach, at a park, visiting monuments; finish with a photo of the whole family (just follow a bit of a script, I hope you got what I meant)
  6. Try to tell your readers something they don’t know
  7. … up to you now!
Bugs & fixes

Thank you to Joseph from Vanmeter School for finding a YouTellYou program bug! YouTellYou was claiming to allow authors to upload photos in JPG, PNG and GIF formats but Joseph discovered that it actually only works with JPG. Joseph tried to upload a nice photo of his dog in PNG format and YouTellYou failed him. I have now limited uploads to JPG photos only, while I fix the problem.

Unpublished Stories cleanup

Starting next month (May) I am going to permanently delete any story more than 3 months old that has not been published. This is necessary to prevent the story database to unnecessarily bloat. If you have any old story that you create but didn’t publish please either publish it or be aware that it will be removed.

Exciting new version in the pipeline

I have started working on the next version of YouTellYou. The major new features will be:
  • Categories’ themes: the magazine categories pages will each have a different color palette and theme
  • Text only sections: authors will be able to choose a section with no photo slots, only text
  • Localization: Italian speaking users will be able to have the Magazine in Italian (menus, headers, etc.); other languages will be added in the future (but I will need help…)
  • Story Language filter: readers will be able to filter stories by language (any!)
I do not have a deadline yet for the new version (the sixth!); it might be ready sometimes in June.

Little MySQL hidden jewels

Fixed a very hidden bug in the search: after I introduced searching by story number, the search had become case sensitive! (you never never never test too much…)

Raise your hand if you knew this: if you concatenate a number to a string in MySQL using the CONCAT function, the LIKE comparison becomes case sensitive and worst the LOWER function does not work. So let’s say you want to concatenate the column userNumber with the column userName, you don’t do it like this:

CONCAT ( userNumber, userName)

but you have to do it this way:

CONCAT ( FORMAT (userNumber,0), userName)

The FORMAT function converts the userNumber column to text and everything is fine again…

Period adjustments

I got rid of the “yesterday” period that made little sense and added an “all times” new period that shows the most viewed / voted / by cat / by author stories of all times (up to 36 stories).

Like the change?

Publish your stories from your phone

Just deployed a new exciting functionality for YouTellYou, now you can publish your on-the-road stories from your mobile phone via email! And you can even add an audio commentary, if you like!

Here is how it works:
Just create an email, attach your photos and send the email to stories@youtellyou.com, it’s that simple!

Within ten minutes from receiving your email YouTellYou will create and publish your Story:

  • The subject of the email will be the title of your Story
  • Any text in the body of the email will be placed in the summary of your Story (up to 500 characters)
  • The photos will be arranged automatically, one per section, in the order you have attached them
  • If you record a voice message and attach it to the email, YouTellYou will place a Quicktime player inside your Story summary and your readers will be able to listen to your commentary

As soon as your Story is published you will receive a confirmation email with the address of your new Story.
If you have signed up for YouTellYou and you send the email from the address you have specified in your profile the new Story will be added to your stories, otherwise a new profile will be created and you will receive the username and password in the confirmation email.

GIVE IT A TRY!

New splash page

New splash page for YouTellYou, hopefully more enticing than the previous.

Here it is:

How do you like it? Any suggestion?

Help completed

All YoutellYou pages have now the lightbox help page.

RSS feeds now available

Actually for the time being it’s one general feed only.. you can subscribe to YouTellYou All Stories feed and check the new stories from your feed reader!

More feeds in the pipeline as soon as the number of posted stories reaches a threshold that makes it worthwhile.

Share your Magazine Page

Now you can email the address of your personal YouTellYou Magazine Page or any other Author’s Page.

From an Author Page (your own or somebody else’s) click on the email icon and fill the form.

The email recipients will receive a link to the Author’s Personal Page.

Back button is now working properly

LOTS of right complaints about the browser back button not working… it’s fixed now, with the exception of the changes in the “flavour” and the period of the Magazine.

Technically: I have changed all window.location.replace(url) to window.open(url, “_self”) while the changes in flavour and period are different Ajax versions of the same page.

A number of cosmetic changes

Thanks to the YouTellYou readers and members that are providing feedback! Due to popular demand…

  1. The YouTellYou logo is now clickable: takes you to the current magazine page
  2. Dashboard has been renamed to be My Stories
  3. My Zine has been renamed to be My Mag
  4. The “back to” Zine, Map, Search options have now the word back to in front and back to Zine has been renamed as back to Mag
  5. The Editor and Preview pages menus are now fully consistent with the work flow: Properties, Editor, Preview, Publish
  6. As a consequence you can now publish straight from the Editor (although I wouldn’t recommend it)
